Diciamo che \( \displaystyle f(x) \) è un \( \displaystyle \text{O} \) di \( \displaystyle g(x) \) in \( \displaystyle x_0 \) se:
(1) \( \displaystyle \exists M > 0 :\ |f(x)| \leq M \ |g(x)|\ \text{de} \text{finitivamente intorno ad } x_0 \) ,
ossia se:
\( \displaystyle \exists M> 0,\ \exists I(x_0)\ \text{intorno di } x_0:\ \forall x\in I(x_0)\cap X\cap Y\setminus \{ x_0\},\ |f(x)|\leq M\ |g(x)| \) ;
in tal caso scriviamo:
\( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) oppure \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}(g(x))\ \text{in } x_0 \)
(il punto \( \displaystyle x_0 \) può anche essere omesso se ciò non crea ambiguità).
Criterio della \( \displaystyle \text{O} \) : Se \( \displaystyle g(x) \) è definitivamente non nulla intorno ad \( \displaystyle x_0 \) e se esiste finito il \( \displaystyle \lim_{x\to x_0} \frac{f(x)}{g(x)} \) , allora risulta \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}(g(x))\ \text{in } x_0 \) .
i) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) , allora \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) .
ii) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) , allora \( \displaystyle f(x)+g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) .
iii) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle \alpha \in \mathbb{R} \) , allora \( \displaystyle \alpha f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) .
iv) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (k(x)) \) allora \( \displaystyle f(x)g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)k(x)) \) ; in particolare \( \displaystyle f^n(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h^n(x)) \) per ogni \( \displaystyle n\in \mathbb{N} \) .
v) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) ed \( \displaystyle f(x) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x) \) sono definitivamente non nulle intorno ad \( \displaystyle x_0 \) , allora \( \displaystyle \tfrac{1}{g(x)}=\text{O}_{x_0} (\tfrac{1}{f(x)}) \) .
i') \( \displaystyle \text{O}_{x_0}(\text{O}_{x_0}(h(x))) =\text{O}_{x_0}(h(x)) \) .
ii') \( \displaystyle \text{O}_{x_0}(h(x))+\text{O}_{x_0}(h(x))=\text{O}_{x_0}(h(x)) \) .
iii') \( \displaystyle \alpha\cdot \text{O}_{x_0}(g(x)) =\text{O}_{x_0}(g(x)) \) per \( \displaystyle \alpha \in \mathbb{R} \) .
iv') \( \displaystyle \text{O}_{x_0}(h(x))\cdot \text{O}_{x_0}(k(x)) =\text{O}_{x_0}(h(x)k(x)) \) ed \( \displaystyle \big[ \text{O}_{x_0}(h(x))\big]^n =\text{O}_{x_0}(h^n(x)) \) per \( \displaystyle n\in \mathbb{N} \) .

Diciamo che \( \displaystyle f(x) \) è un \( \displaystyle \text{o} \) di \( \displaystyle g(x) \) in \( \displaystyle x_0 \) se:
(2) \( \displaystyle \forall \varepsilon >0,\ |f(x)|\leq \varepsilon\ |g(x)|\ \text{definitivamente intorno ad }x_0 \)
ossia se:
\( \displaystyle \forall \varepsilon >0,\ \exists I_\varepsilon (x_0)\ \text{intorno di } x_0:\ \forall x\in I_\varepsilon (x_0)\cap X\cap Y\setminus \{ x_0\} ,\ |f(x)|\leq \varepsilon\ |g(x)| \) ;
in tal caso scriviamo:
\( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) oppure \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}(g(x))\ \text{in } x_0 \)
(il punto \( \displaystyle x_0 \) può anche essere omesso se ciò non crea ambiguità).
Criterio della \( \displaystyle \text{o} \) : Se \( \displaystyle g(x) \) è definitivamente non nulla intorno ad \( \displaystyle x_0 \) e \( \displaystyle \lim_{x\to x_0} \frac{f(x)}{g(x)} =0 \) , allora risulta \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}(g(x))\ \text{in } x_0 \) .
i) Se risulta:
- \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) oppure
- \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) oppure
- \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) ,
allora \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) .
ii-a) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) , allora \( \displaystyle f(x)+g(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) .
ii-b) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) , allora \( \displaystyle f(x)+g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) .
iii) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle \alpha \in \mathbb{R} \) , allora \( \displaystyle \alpha f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (g(x)) \) .
iv-a) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (k(x)) \) allora \( \displaystyle f(x)g(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)k(x)) \) ; in particolare \( \displaystyle f^n(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h^n(x)) \) per ogni \( \displaystyle n\in \mathbb{N} \) .
iv-b) Se \( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)) \) e \( \displaystyle g(x)=\text{O}_{x_0} (k(x)) \) allora \( \displaystyle f(x)g(x)=\text{o}_{x_0} (h(x)k(x)) \) .
i') \( \displaystyle \text{o}_{x_0}(\text{o}_{x_0}(h(x))) =\text{o}_{x_0}(\text{O}_{x_0}(h(x)))=\text{O}_{x_0}(\text{o}_{x_0}(h(x)))=\text{o}_{x_0}(h(x)) \) .
ii'-a) \( \displaystyle \text{o}_{x_0}(h(x))+\text{o}_{x_0}(h(x))=\text{o}_{x_0}(h(x)) \) .
ii'-b) \( \displaystyle \text{o}_{x_0}(h(x))+\text{O}_{x_0}(h(x))=\text{O}_{x_0}(h(x)) \) .
iii') \( \displaystyle \alpha\cdot \text{o}_{x_0}(g(x)) =\text{o}_{x_0}(g(x)) \) per \( \displaystyle \alpha \in \mathbb{R} \) .
iv'-a) \( \displaystyle \text{o}_{x_0}(h(x))\cdot \text{o}_{x_0}(k(x)) =\text{o}_{x_0}(h(x)k(x)) \) ed \( \displaystyle \big[ \text{o}_{x_0}(h(x))\big]^n =\text{o}_{x_0}(h^n(x)) \) per \( \displaystyle n\in \mathbb{N} \) .
iv'-b) \( \displaystyle \text{o}_{x_0}(h(x))\cdot \text{O}_{x_0}(k(x)) =\text{o}_{x_0}(h(x)k(x)) \) .
\( \displaystyle f(x)=\text{o}_{x_0}(g(x))\quad \Rightarrow \quad f(x)=\text{O}_{x_0}(g(x)) \) .
